The Chasam Sofer evaluates a correspondent's proposed resolution to the Darkei Moshe's question on the Rosh in Bava Metzi'a 19a, which concerns why the Rosh rules 'bring proof' in the case of a found shichrur despite holding edav b'chasumav zakin lo. The correspondent argued that chav la'acherim prevents the witnesses' signatures from effecting acquisition since manumission removes the slave from existing liens. The Chasam Sofer ultimately rejects this premise, arguing instead that witnesses' signing is legally equivalent to delivery and raising a more nuanced resolution involving Abaye's view in Kesubos that later-arising detriment does not retroactively void an earlier acquisition.
