R. Pinchas Leib challenged the Taz's ruling that an animal with a broken spine and majority of flesh is permitted when the spinal cord remains intact. The Chasam Sofer firmly defends the Taz, demonstrating that Tosfos' question from Zei'ri actually compels the Taz's resolution, and invoking the principle that since Rashi and the Rambam clearly require the cord to be severed, one cannot add new treifos categories without a clear source.
