The Chasam Sofer validates the widespread practice of peeling lung adhesions (sirchos) and testing with lukewarm water (poshrin), ruling that when the adhesion is merely between points of the external membrane rather than growing from the lung body itself — as evidenced by the membrane peeling off cleanly without the lung bubbling — it does not constitute a treifah-causing adhesion. He permits an expert, God-fearing inspector to rely on this method, while recommending extra-scrupulous individuals avoid such cases, and defends the Simlah Chadashah's ruling regarding a shriveled lobe (tzamkah).
