Validity of Get with Erroneous 'Levi' Added to Divorcée's Father's Name

From: Rabbi Akiva Eiger

To: Unknown recipient

Description

This teshuva reproduces a letter written to Rabbi Akiva Eiger by Rabbi Meir Posner (Beis Meir) concerning a get from Warsaw where the designation 'Levi' was erroneously added to the divorcée's father's name. The Beis Meir argues the get is valid by analogy to an error in birthplace, relying on the principle that witnesses do not sign falsely when the erroneous information was not required to be written, and rejects concerns about intentional sabotage via a shaliach. He nonetheless declines to rule alone and requests Rabbi Akiva Eiger's concurrence.
