Validity of a Get with False 'Levi' Designation on Father's Name

From: Rabbi Akiva Eiger

To: Rabbi Rabbis and Beis Din of Warsaw

Description

An agunah received a get in which her father's name was falsely inscribed with the tribal designation 'Levi.' Despite the great urgency and impossibility of obtaining a replacement get, Rabbi Akiva Eiger rules that he cannot permit the get, as the weight of halachic authority — including the Rosh, Tur, Maharival, and Shulchan Aruch — establishes that altering the father's name invalidates a get even bedieved. He rejects the lenient ruling of the Avodas HaGershuni and defers the matter to the great scholars of the generation.
