Validity of a Get with Changed Identifying Details

From: Rabbi Akiva Eiger

To: Unknown recipient

Description

This teshuvah contains a letter from Rabbi Meir Posner to Rabbi Akiva Eiger, disputing the Maharach"sh's position on altered identifying details in a get. Rabbi Meir argues that changing core details such as names or places of residence invalidates a get at the Torah level, since the document fails to identify the specific parties, while writing 'Kohen' for a non-Kohen does not invalidate the get as the essential names remain correct. He further holds that invalid documents do not disqualify the subscribing witnesses, and that delivery via a shaliach remains unaffected.
