The Chasam Sofer demonstrates that the husband's renunciation of inheritance rights (siluk) cannot be effective before erusin because all major Rishonim classify that stage as lo avidi d'asu, rendering the kinyan invalid even for those who hold adam makneh davar shelo ba la'olam. He rejects Rabbi Benet's theory that chuppah koneh necessitates a particular timing, arguing that chuppah requires the groom's intent to take effect. He endorses the Frankfurt custom of performing the siluk between birkas erusin and birkas nissu'in, explaining that the groom's deliberate preservation of that window prevents the chuppah from completing the marriage until after the blessings.
