A community asks whether it may change its prayer rite from the traditional Ashkenazi nusach to Nusach Sefard under Chassidic influence. The Chasam Sofer rules that established communal custom may not be changed unilaterally, and that each nusach is equally valid before Heaven, but communities should follow their ancestral practice and avoid divisive liturgical changes.
