When a synagogue is demolished and rebuilt with additional seats, do original holders retain their physical locations or follow the nominal designations of their seats? The Chasam Sofer rules that seat-holders retain ownership of their original ground positions as a real-property right, but must compensate the community for any appreciation in value caused by the expansion.
