Status of flock attacked by wolves: permissibility of animals and their milk

Description

After a flock of 370 sheep was attacked by wolves overnight, the Chasam Sofer rules that the doubtful sheep should be conditionally sold to a non-Jew to avoid the takkala risk of forbidden meat or milk. The milk produced in the interim is permitted through bitul, relying on the Shach's ruling that bitul lechatchila is allowed when the very existence of the issur is itself in doubt, combined with the significant financial loss involved.
