From: Rabbi Moshe Sofer
To: Rabbi Meir
Rabbi Meir proposed that a spring welling upward from below (novei'a) lacks the power to rectify drawn water that preceded it, unlike a flowing spring (zochel). The Chasam Sofer rejects this distinction, demonstrating that neither Rishonim nor Acharonim recognize it, and that the Maharik explicitly dismisses any differentiation between springs for this purpose. Nonetheless, he rules that where there is no significant loss and no burden on the community, one who is strict and avoids relying on this mikvah will be blessed.
