Shabbos Labor on Leased Villages and Fields

From: Rabbi Moshe Sofer

To: Unknown recipient

Description

A Jew who leases villages and fields from a nobleman, hiring non-Jewish workers and using leased animals, asks whether the workers may labor and animals be used on Shabbos. The Chasam Sofer rules leniently based on Rav Natronai Gaon's principle that when a Jew immediately arranges non-Jewish contractors before his name becomes publicly associated with the property, no Shabbos prohibition applies.
