Sanctification of Temple Vessels: Anointing vs. Service

From: Rabbi Moshe Sofer

To: Rabbi Shlomo Segal

Description

Rabbi Shlomo Segal asks about the Ramban's ruling that Korach's 250 men's censers were not sanctified through service, and whether all vessels in Moshe's era required anointing rather than service. The Chasam Sofer firmly rejects this, arguing that only Moshe's original Mishkan vessels were anointed, while any additional vessels—even in Moshe's time—would have been sanctified through service, and using the anointing oil on unauthorized vessels would have been forbidden.
