Relying on physical signs and non-Jewish testimony to verify minimum age of livestock

From: Rabbi Moshe Sofer

To: Rabbi Aharon Hirschman

Description

The Chasam Sofer rules leniently, holding that the presence of two physical signs (horns and teeth) combined with unintentional testimony (mesiach lefi tumo) of a non-Jewish seller suffices to permit slaughter of young animals of uncertain age. He demonstrates that even according to stringent views holding the nefel concern may be Torah-level, these signs reduce any remaining concern to a simple minority resolved by the principle of rov.
