A community with a narrow synagogue seeks to move the Aron Kodesh from the eastern to the southern wall to accommodate an expanded women's section. The Chasam Sofer forbids moving it merely for the women's convenience, but permits repositioning it toward the southeast corner, since a compass survey shows the current orientation was northeast, and southeast better aligns with the Levush's required diagonal toward Eretz Yisrael.
