Prohibition Status of Wife of Father's Mother's Brother as Sheniyah

Description

The Chasam Sofer rules stringently that the wife of one's father's mother's brother (eshes achi eim aviv) is prohibited as a sheniyah, even though this precise relationship is not explicitly listed in the Gemara. He argues that because the underlying ervah (eshes achi aviv) is close and well-established, the interposition of a mother in the chain does not create a generational break (hefsek), and that authorities who reject Amimar's leniency would prohibit this relationship as well. He concludes that l'chatchilah the marriage is forbidden, and suggests theoretically that even if already married, divorce may be required.
