Prohibition of Chalav Akum as a Formal Decree Regardless of Location

Description

The Chasam Sofer rules that chalav akum was prohibited through a formal rabbinic decree binding universally, even where non-kosher milk-producing animals are absent, and that for Ashkenazim this stringency carries the force of a Torah-level vow. Bread kneaded with such milk is likewise prohibited. However, those who eat chalav akum based on lenient authorities may still be counted toward a zimun, in the interest of communal harmony.
