From: Rabbi Moshe Sofer
To: Rabbi Meir
The Chasam Sofer resolves two difficulties with the Ran's analysis of whether proceeds from selling issurei hana'ah or wages from yayin nesech are Torah-forbidden. He distinguishes cases of indirect benefit involving uncertainty or compulsion from voluntary transactions with certain expectation of payment, and shows that the Gemara's challenge in Avodah Zarah works elegantly under both the Ramban's and Tosfos's positions.
