Placing a Shoteh Child in Non-Kosher Institution

From: Rabbi Moshe Sofer

To: Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch Oppenheim

Description

Relatives of a wealthy orphan who is a shoteh seek to send him to a non-Jewish institution that can develop his mental faculties, though kosher food is unavailable there. The Chasam Sofer permits this strictly speaking, but morally prefers the child remain untreated rather than risk spiritual harm from non-kosher consumption.
