When a critically ill animal faces total loss due to the absence of a shochet, the Chasam Sofer rules it is clearly permitted to instruct a non-Jew to perform nechira to salvage value from the carcass. He argues on multiple grounds: the prohibition of amirah le'nachri in non-Shabbos contexts is halachically unresolved, and the prohibition against causing treifos applies only to ikur — making an animal waste away slowly — not to killing an animal already near death.
