The Chasam Sofer rules against the practice of an onen fictitiously selling his store to an acquaintance who operates it during shivah, identifying it as a transparent ruse undermining both the prohibition on commerce during aninus and the onen's legal standing to transact. While concluding that the lenient view permitting all avel-restricted activities to an onen is difficult to sustain, he nonetheless rules that one should not forcefully protest those who follow the practice, applying the principle of mutav sheyihyu shoggin.
