Permissibility of Commercial Trade in Treifos and Neveilos

From: Rabbi Akiva Eiger

To: Rabbi Yaakov

Description

Rabbi Akiva Eiger investigates whether a third party may purchase neveilos or treifos and resell them for profit, a dispute between the Taz (lenient) and the Shach/Bach/Pri Chadash (stringent). He argues that standard treifos from sirchos constitute at most a safek d'Rabbanan, supporting the lenient custom through a sfek sfeka. His practical ruling: one who asks should be guided away from the practice, but those following the established custom need not be protested, and the shochet should be instructed to identify which treifos are definitively prohibited.
