The Chasam Sofer investigates whether congealed liquids (butter, frozen honey, congealed wine) retain their halachic liquid status requiring netilas yadayim when eating food dipped into them. Ruling with the Taz against the Magen Avraham, he holds that congealed liquids which melt again revert to full liquid status requiring hand-washing, but liquids placed directly into food as ingredients are classified as food, not liquid.
