Kohen's Wife Permitted After Retracting Claim of Violation by Robbers

From: Rabbi Moshe Sofer

To: Rabbi Zalman Ullmann

Description

A Kohen's wife initially reported being violated by robbers but later retracted, claiming she exaggerated to intensify the legal pursuit. The Chasam Sofer rules she remains permitted to her husband on three grounds: seclusion with robbers creates no presumption of violation, her retraction is supported by a credible amtala, and her husband's initial statement of belief was made under emotional duress and does not constitute shavya anafshei chatikha d'issura.
