Jews living in India who face mob violence if they do not light candles during idolatrous processions may not perform this act themselves, even though candle-lighting is classified as mere ornamentation rather than an offering. The Chasam Sofer rules that a Jew must be prepared to sacrifice his life rather than participate in any avodah zarah-related activity, but permits asking a non-Jewish neighbor to light on one's behalf using the formula 'malteini min ha'otzer' rather than 'al ta'ul tachtai'.
