The teshuvah addresses whether a community must hire a rabbi, whether individuals can object, whether formal semicha is required, and whether the community can remove a rabbi when his contract expires. The Chasam Sofer rules that every community is obligated to hire a rabbi and the contractual term limit exists solely for the rabbi's benefit.
