Fish Broth Mixed with Animal Fat and the Danger of Fish and Meat

From: Rabbi Moshe Sofer

To: Rabbi Hershel

Description

Fish broth poured hot into a vessel containing animal fat was ruled upon by local authorities as permitted. The Chasam Sofer permits the broth on multiple grounds — including that the danger of combining fish and meat may no longer apply in our times, that only irui (pouring) rather than cooking occurred, and that established practice allows rinsing as sufficient. However, congealed fat found to contain trapped fish broth must be forbidden.
