Father's Pledge to Feed Couple After Daughter's Death

Date: 8 Adar Sheni 5581

From: Rabbi Moshe Sofer

To: Unknown recipient

Description

The Chasam Sofer rules that no money may be extracted from the bride's father — neither for the husband nor for the deceased wife's daughters — because an umdena (implied condition) establishes that the pledge was conditioned on the daughter being alive to benefit. He rejects contrary views of the Taz and Chacham Tzvi, affirming the ruling of Rabbeinu Tam as codified in Even HaEzer 52.
