Disputed Kiddushin — Conflicting Testimony on Betrothal Validity

Date: 7 Shvat 5583

From: Rabbi Moshe Sofer

To: Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch Oppenheim

Description

This teshuva is a formal testimony record (gevi'as eidus) compiled by the beis din of Temesvár regarding a disputed betrothal, forwarded to the Chasam Sofer for adjudication. The bachelor and maiden give sharply conflicting accounts of whether valid kiddushin occurred, and the two witnesses disagree on key details. A written testimony document paid for by the bachelor conflicts with subsequent oral testimony, and the Chasam Sofer's actual ruling is not contained in this document.
