Candle-Lighting as Kabbalas Shabbos and Questionable Wine for Kiddush

From: Rabbi Moshe Sofer

To: Rabbi Meir

Description

The student challenges the Bahag's view that lighting Shabbos candles constitutes kabbalas Shabbos, asking why the Gemara's discussion of eruv timing ignores this. The Chasam Sofer resolves this by distinguishing between eruv (prohibited even b'dieved after lighting) and hatmanah (permitted b'dieved as a mere shevus), and rules that regionally problematic wine permitted for hefsed merubeh may be used for kiddush.
