Bypassing Kohen's First Aliyah by Communal Ordinance

From: Rabbi Moshe Sofer

To: Trencsen

Description

The community of Trencsén asks whether they can enact a permanent ordinance bypassing their sole Kohen's first aliyah when distinguished members or those with special obligations need to be called. The Chasam Sofer rules they must first obtain the Kohen's voluntary consent, which would make the takkanah permanently binding, but cannot force it upon him; he suggests compensating the Kohen with other synagogue honors like carrying the Sefer Torah.
