The junior members of the Pressburg Chevra Kadisha asked whether a murdered Jew should be buried in his ancestral plot or separately, based on a misconception that those killed by non-Jews are equivalent to those executed by beis din. The Chasam Sofer ruled decisively that the murdered man must be buried in his ancestral plot with full honor, finding no basis in the Rishonim or Shulchan Aruch for any separating custom, and adding that death at the hands of non-Jews provides immediate atonement entitling the deceased to full burial honors.
