Berachah over Corn Bread and Buckwheat

From: Rabbi Moshe Sofer

To: Rabbi Yehudah

Description

The question concerns which berachah to recite over bread and cooked dishes made from corn (Türkischer Weizen), a local staple. The Chasam Sofer rules it should be shehakol as kitniyos, but raises the possibility that corn may be classified as a type of rice warranting mezonos due to its fermentation capacity (gerira). Given this unresolved botanical doubt, he advises eating such foods only within a bread meal.
