The Chasam Sofer affirms the Rema's ruling that any adhesion between the hamsas and the beis hakosos must prompt examination of the stomach, testifying from hundreds of cases that a foreign object is always found. A needle embedded in the stomach wall renders the animal treif; one found only in the folds or on the peresh inclines toward treif but may be permitted where earlier authorities ruled leniently. In an emergency before Pesach, he permitted examiners to discard stomach contents without checking, preferring non-examination to an uncomfortable leniency.
