A communal dispute arose over whether a fixed weekly practice of adding an eighth aliyah on Shabbos to fund the Talmud Torah is permissible. The Chasam Sofer rules that adding aliyos is permitted on Shabbos, especially as a fixed communal practice for Torah education.
