Abolishing Separate Torah-Reading Societies in Synagogue

From: Rabbi Moshe Sofer

To: Rabbi Ber

Description

Three Torah-reading societies, originally established to address insufficient aliyos, now caused congregants to skip Mussaf, disgracing the community. The Chasam Sofer rules the societies should be dissolved but advises against direct prohibition to avoid strife, recommending instead that respected members voluntarily leave the societies, causing them to gradually dissolve on their own.
