Biography

Rabbi Zelig Epstein was a rosh yeshiva who served for several decades at Yeshiva Torah Vodaath before co-founding Yeshiva Shaar HaTorah-Grodno in Queens, New York. He established the yeshiva, which comprised a high school, beis midrash, and kollel, naming it after the institution in Grodno led by his wife's grandfather, Rabbi Shimon Shkop. A talmid of the pre-war Mir Yeshiva, he escaped the Holocaust by fleeing with the yeshiva to Shanghai and was later recruited to teach in America by Rabbi Yaakov Kamenetsky.
