Rabbi Yosef Zundel of Salant was a talmid of Rabbi Chaim of Volozhin and later of Rabbi Akiva Eiger. He was the primary teacher of Rabbi Yisrael Salanter, founder of the Mussar movement. He settled in Yerushalayim, where he established an independent Ashkenazi beis din and appointed his son-in-law, Rabbi Shmuel Salant, to lead the community.
