Rabbi Yosef Escapa was a leading Sephardic posek and Rosh Yeshiva in Izmir. He was a student of Rabbi Chaim Benveniste's father and the primary teacher of Shabsai Tzvi before excommunicating him. He authored significant halachic responsa and served as the chief rabbinical authority of the Izmir Jewish community.
