Biography

Rabbi Yom Tov Lipmann Heller, a talmid of Rabbi Yehuda Loew of Prague, was a leader of the Jewish communities in Prague, Vienna, and Kraków. He authored the Tosfos Yom Tov, a commentary on the Mishnah. Despite enduring false imprisonment, heavy fines, and the upheavals of the Thirty Years' War and the Chmielnicki massacres, he instituted the Mi Shebeirach for those who refrain from talking during davening.
