Rabbi Yitzchak of Volozhin was a talmudist and Rosh Yeshiva of the Volozhin Yeshiva, succeeding his father, Rabbi Chaim of Volozhin. As Rosh Yeshiva of Etz Chaim in Volozhin, he was a central figure in Lithuanian Torah scholarship during the first half of the nineteenth century. He also engaged with the emerging Russian state educational authorities, representing the interests of the traditional yeshiva world.
