Rabbi Yisrael Salanter, born Yisrael Lipkin, was the ideological founder of the 19th-century Mussar movement in Lithuania, which promoted the intensive study of ethics and introspection to foster spiritual growth. He established study houses and advocated for a focus on personal character development. Although he wrote little, his ideas were disseminated through his Iggeret ha-Mussar and through his disciples, including Rabbi Yitzchak Blazer and Rabbi Simcha Zissel Ziv.
