Biography

Rabbi Yaakov Ettlinger served as the Chief Rabbi of Altona and was a leading figure of German Orthodoxy. He authored the Talmudic commentary Aruch LaNer and the responsa collection Binyan Tzion. As editor of the German-language Orthodox periodical Der treue Zionswächter, he articulated a vision for traditional Judaism. Among his students was Rabbi Shimshon Raphael Hirsch.
