Biography

Rabbi Tuvia Geffen served as a communal rav and posek in early American Orthodoxy. He was the rabbi of Congregation Shearith Israel in Atlanta for many years and was instrumental in centralizing kashrus supervision in the Southern United States. His halachic responsum on Coca-Cola led to the reformulation of the beverage and its certification as kosher, including for Pesach. His shu"t and other writings address the challenges of maintaining traditional halacha within the social and economic context of American Jewish life.
