Biography

Rabbi Shmuel Strashun was a Vilna Talmudist and merchant who dedicated his life to scholarship without holding a formal rabbinic post. His extensive annotations on the Babylonian Talmud and its major commentaries, known as Hagahos HaRashash, are included in standard editions of the Vilna Shas. He also authored works tracing the Talmudic sources used by Rabbi Moshe ben Maimon.
