Rabbi Shlomo Goren served as the founding head of the Israel Defense Forces Military Rabbinate, later Chief Rabbi of Tel Aviv–Jaffa, and then Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of Israel. His halachic work addressed the interface of modern sovereignty and warfare with Jewish law, and he authored Torat HaMedinah, Meshiv Milchamah, and Torat HaShabbat VeHaMoed. In his later years, he established and headed a yeshiva in Jerusalem.
