A talmid of Rabbi Yaakov Pollak, Rabbi Shalom Shachna established the yeshiva in Lublin in 1515 and served as Rosh Yeshiva and rabbinic authority in Poland for decades. Among his students was Rabbi Moshe Isserles (the Rema), who was also his son-in-law. He left almost no written works, as he was opposed to committing his teachings to writing.
