Rabbi Shalom Rokeach, known as the Sar Shalom, founded the Belz Chasidic dynasty. He served as rabbi of Belz from 1817, establishing the town as a center of Chasidic learning and practice. His teachings, which combined Chasidic spirituality with rigorous Torah scholarship, were preserved in the anthology Midbar Kodesh.
