Rabbi Naftali Tzvi Yehuda Berlin, known as the Netziv, was the final and longest-serving Rosh Yeshiva of the Volozhin Yeshiva. His leadership coincided with pressure from the Tsarist government to introduce secular studies, leading to his decision to close the institution in 1892. His major works include the Torah commentary Ha'amek Davar, the responsa collection Meshiv Davar, and Ha'amek She'eilah. His writings are characterized by their linguistic sensitivity and focus on the text's straightforward meaning (peshat).
