Rabbi Naftali Amsterdam was among the foremost talmidim of Rabbi Yisrael Salanter, founder of the Mussar movement, alongside Rabbi Yitzchak Blazer and Rabbi Simcha Zissel Ziv. He was known for his piety and his embodiment of Mussar ideals. Before immigrating to Yerushalayim in 1883, he held several rabbinic posts, including a tenure as a religious guide for Jewish conscripts in the Russian army in St. Petersburg. Though he did not author any books, his lifestyle was influential within the Mussar school.
